Well what I would recommend using are those sites that come up when you google your profession ex: private investigator. Whatever sites come up I click on and see if there is a way to list on them. Because when people need a certain professional usually the first thing they do is google them. Now this is just some advice no guarantees but it often does work. Also in my area they have free newspaper listings, sure its not the best but hey its out there.

How about this...
Get an inexpensive magnetic sign w/your "advertisement" on it, and pay a local (trustworthy) teen $20 a month to stick it on his/her car door.
It's all part of "name recognition". That's what you're looking for.
People will recognize the name so that, when they -do- look for an investigator, your agency is likely to get the phone call.
Just an idea.

The magnet idea isnt bad also they have bench's and other things but you could also send out letters to lawyers and attorneys letting them know what you do.

I read all the posts and I found them very good, but here is one new....why don't you post a big poster in front of Police Department ?! A lot of people thinks their problem is police bussines, but in a half of the cases they misjudge.

Have you considered doing a meet and greet? Send out invites to attorneys in a specific field of law, for example family law. Make arraingments at a local pub or restaraunt for a private room. Do an open bar for an hour and do the meet and greet. It's not as expensive as you might think and the return will be worth it. Besides, have you ever met a lawyer that would turn down a free drink?

Hmmmm...that's an interesting idea...but I'm not convinced it would be "less than you think".
Probably several hundred dolars, I'd expect.
How much did it cost you, when you tried it?

In addition to joining the various yahoo groups and this particular I advertise with the local papers, a small box add ran me $65 for one week and produced 2 paying clients.
I also placed an ad for services on craigslist which has given me one client and one referral.
My best business by far though has been referrals from other PI's. We can make or break each other. I average at least one case a week from other agencies.

Wow, I have gotten some great Ideas, so far. Some I've already tried, and some I will try. Has one lately been hit by the economy? Advertising is great, but if the economy has hit the Pacific Northwest I feel pretty hard. Again thanks for all the great ideas.

I don't know about some of these replies. Mr. DeGon, I think much depends on what type of investigations you are wanting to take on. Personally, I don't do a lot of domestic so the magnetic sign or bench would not be good for me as it would probably only send domestic clients who are often immediately turned off when they find out the cost of an investigation. (Most want it done for free like the guys on t.v., as you well know.)
If you are wanting to conduct criminal defense investigations, for example, I think THEN you may want to gear yourself to a bench in front of the county courthouse.
Internet (ie: Google) seems to be the way to go. I have had great success with PInow.com and a couple others. But some have produced NO clients...so it is a hit-or-miss kind of thing.
Specializing in one area or another is going to weigh in on where your marketing dollars are spent.
A good person to talk with regarding marketing would be Jimmy Mesis of PI Magazine. Both he and the former magazine owner are both marketing gurus and I often conduct seminars regarding marketing your business. If they are doing such a seminar in your area, it would pay to check them out.
Recently, I have placed an add with the online Yellowpages. I don't know how well it is going to work, but I am already disappointed with that decision.
FREE Networking sites such as this one, myspace, facebook and so on have produced a couple of good hits. So always add your name to those kind of sites as well.
